Annette Funicello had just turned thirteen when Walt Disney, the studio's director of production, spotted her dancing in the Fullerton California amateur Swan Lake. Funicello did not audition in the Mickey Mouse Club and joined in the latter half of the season of the series, much to the annoyance by her Mickey Mouse Club peers. Disney proved right when they announced that Funicello would be The Mickey Mouse Club's most popular performer and appeared on Adventures in Dairyland, her story. Funicello had to start recording records in order to realize her superstar potential. Annette was not very enthusiastic about her singing, so Disney brought in Tutti Camerata to be her manager who would aid her development as a performer. Funicello did manage to get used to the idea recording music, and loved being with Camerata. It was among those who, at forty, could to understand the fundamentals of rock. Annette Sings Anka was the third studio album and was probably the first to include the songs of rock stars as part of the repertoire. Funicello starred on Beach Party the first of five immensely popular movies about beach parties. Usually featuring Frankie Avalon although produced by AIP, the scripts of each of the films were personally reviewed and approved by Walt Disney in order to protect Annette's squeaky-clean image.
