O'Neil was in high-school when she auditioned in 2005 to be a part of the third Canadian Idol season. She was able to advance into the top 100 rounds due to the fact that judges were awed by her vocal performances. O'Neil was praised highly by the judges. However, she experienced major losses during the top 10 weeks and Top 9 of the Finals in which she was relegated into the lowest 3 and 2 spots respectively. The judges were shocked, and they recommended to the audience to decide for Melissa as one of the contestants with the greatest ability to sing. O'Neil was never in the top 3 after a series of consistently outstanding performances. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7,2005, where O'Neil made it into the final two of the contest. Werner said that in the morning, newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie in the finals. She became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
